# What the customer does

In Site settings → Domains, the customer adds their domain and creates two DNS records:

| Record | Name | Value | Why |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| TXT | `_docsbuilder.docs.customer.com` | the token shown | Proves they own the domain |
| CNAME | `docs.customer.com` | your CNAME target | Sends visitors to your platform |

A bare domain (`customer.com`) can't have a CNAME record, so they use an ALIAS or flattened CNAME record, or an A record to your server's address if you give one in the admin. A subdomain is always simpler.

JustDocs checks new domains every few minutes, then less often. Each domain moves through **Waiting for DNS → Connecting → Getting certificate → Live**, and when something is wrong the customer sees a plain explanation, such as "points to X, not Y". **Check connection** runs the check straight away. A domain is only used for canonical links and the sitemap once it's Live, which means it answers over HTTPS and leads to your install.
